MTCS timber certification programme was established by MTCC (Malaysian Timber Certification Council) effective on October 2001. Development of this programme is due to the concerning in ensuring the sustainable management of Malaysia’s forest as well as to meet the global demand for certified timber products.In 2009, MTCS gained worldwide recognition as it was endorsed by the Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), the largest forest certification program, currently representing more than 325 million ha of certified forests worldwide. The MTCS is also the first tropical timber certification scheme in the Asia Pacific region to be endorsed by the PEFC. Two things were given attentiveness by MTCC in this program, Forest Management Certification and Chain and Custody Certification (COC).
FOREST MANAGEMENT CERTIFICATION under the MTCS involving Natural Forest and Forest Plantation where it can be done by the third party audit of the forest management practice in Forest Management Unit (FMU) and Forest Plantation Management Unit (FPMU) to assess compliance with the requirements of a prescribed standard, leading to an award of a Certificate for Forest Management or Certificate for Forest Plantation Management under the MTCS.
